It is widely accepted across the financial planning community that this award is very much reserved for a select few firms within the financial advice market. Chartered status is only awarded to firms which meet rigorous criteria relating to professionalism and capability and commit to the CII's Code of Ethics & Conduct reinforcing the highest standards of professional practice in their business dealings. Whilst many IFA firms aspire to this level, few actually attain it since 50% of its directors must also be qualified to Chartered level. Sharon Sutton, who is the principal and managing director of Thornton attained the individual Chartered Financial Planner title by recently completing the CII Advanced Diploma for Financial Planning. This tertiary education level of qualification is held by approximately 1500 individuals.
